nihil-sin-nefas-deactivated2012 asked: so i was thinking of getting a ball python next time i get paid and i was wondering if you had any advice you could give yo someone getting their first snake
Sure! Handle the snake frequently to get it used to you. Last night Daniel and I took our boa to a party, and naturally people were passing it around, but as soon as it got back around my neck, he secured himself around me and buried his head in my chest. I handle him often so he knows he’s safe with me, and is less anxious once he’s on my body. And, since he knows he won’t be hurt if he’s being held, he’s never bit anyone, or ever even been remotely aggressive. I think handling is the key part of taking care of a snake.
Also, if possible, designate another tank (other than the one the python will prominently live in) as a feeding tank. That way the snake will associate the other tank with food, and not accidently bit you when you go to take him out of his home tank.
Don’t handle him while he’s shedding; they develop a milky liquid behind their eyes that leaves them blind for a few days, and they become nervous and hostile. Shedding, eating, digesting, and using the bathroom are when you don’t want to bother your snake, because this is when they are most vulnerable, and can get hostile. Don’t handle him for about 24 hours after he eats, too.
That’s about all of the advice I have for you. Good luck with your python!
